CtCCCC entered a new era playing an XI aside match on home soil for the first time when they took on the Moose XI, and did so in good spirits naming a strong side featuring former Perse first XI stalwarts Brookes, Hammond and Hesketh.
Such spirit was soon extracted as the opposition took somewhat of a liking to the CtC bowling attack. Davidson was the pick of the bunch with figures of 11-1-1-36, and Hammond toiled admirably for his 1-71 from a mammoth 12 over spell. Gimson, missing his swede due to personal reasons, did also manage a wicket, and Hesketh burgled two - including the prize scalp of opposition captain Rudkin Sr.. Worried by the potential power in the CtCCCC line-up Rudkin decided to bat on and on, only declaring afrer baggo had seen his first ball of the game hit for six onto the railway line, with the score on 304-5. A mammoth total no doubt, but with Cassels fresh off a 100 the day before, surely there was hope? However, facing some hostile early bowling Cass decided to use his 'get-out' shot and run the ball down to third man, forgetting the 6 catchers in place behind the wicket - one of whom gratefully took the chance with the score still on 0. This bought Hesketh to the crease who added 88 with Cassels Snr, who frustrated the oppo with some excellent playing and missing outside the off stump, mixed with hearty bunts down the ground. Brookes (19) kept Hesketh company adding (56) for the third wicket to leave the game well balanced on 144-3, plenty of overs left and Hesketh playing beautifully.... Rudkin was heard to say he knew he should've batted past tea. Alas, he need not of worried. The middle order of Dillon (4); Baggo (0); Hammond (9) and Shaw (0) offered minimal resistance, and seeing the ineptitude of his colleagues, one couldn't blame Hesketh for giving his wicket away for an excellent 84. Davidson and Dean tried to block out the remaining 15 overs but fell still 10 short to give The Moose XI a comprehensive 121 run victory,. CTCCCC: 1. A.P.Brookes; 2. B.L.R.Cassels; 3.
