Yesterday we enjoyed a competitive and good-spirited match vs. The Moose XI, captained by Henry Rudkin. Moose batted first (inserted by Dean – a ‘good toss to lose’ according to Rudkin) and with the score 120-2, the rate accelerating, CtCCCC dropping catches for fun and the captain with his pads on next in… Rudkin was rumoured to be eyeing a declaration around the 400 mark. However Pearson made the crucial breakthrough to bring Rudkin to the crease and from there Davidson (5-38) and Dorgan (2-43) combined to bundle the Moose out for 192. Earlier in the innings Rutt, Gimson and Hammond had bowled excellently with frustratingly little reward, mostly thanks to our own inability to catch.
Whilst this certainly seemed more gettable than the target of 305 from last year, the pitch remained green and we knew the opposition contained at least two dangerous bowlers. Brothers Cassels played and missed for a while, reaching 27 before Ben played on to Ogden. Hammond, who had been buzzing in the field all day, looked immediately assured and played some excellent pulls and punches through the covers which formed the backbone of 92 run partnership with the Cat, bought to an end when the Cat was caught for a valuable 36. Dillon came and went for 12, as ever containing some glorious strokes, before Hammond departed for an excellent 53 with the score 150 and the final hours pay beginning. With Rudkin’s team in disarray amid rumours of infighting and rogue fielding positions (the lack of three gully’s to the Cat being a particularly sore point) Pearson and Rutt calmly bought CtCCCC home to record a five wicket victory.
Some stats gimpery:
o When we last lost to the Moose we had played 5 and lost 5… Since then we have played a further 8 (inc. LMS) and won 7
o The Cat became the third man to 100 runs
o Hammond registered the third 50 of the club’s history
o The second wicket partnership of 92 between Cat and Hammo was a new club record (beating 88 by The Cat and Hesketh vs. The Moose last year)
o The 6th wicket partnership of 44* for Rutt and Pearson was also a club record (beating Pemberton, H.G.B. & Davidson, R.W. vs. Oeiras C.C. 2013; 18)
o Davidson became the first man to take a five-for and the first to ten wickets for the club… he now has 12 wickets at 13.6.
o Cassels B; Dillon N.J.; Deam G.E.J. retained there 100% appearance record in XI aside fixtures.
